After countless calls and plane trips had been booked for his family, Jason stayed on at the hospital to wait for news on his grandmother. Soon, she was admitted to a private room and taken for tests.

He sat with her long into the night, praying for her to recognize him. Dinner came and he tried to get her to eat something. She nibbled on it, but mostly stared out the window without saying a word.

It was incredibly hard to see her like this, fragile and worn down. She had been his strength for these past months. Now, he would be strong for her.

Her final test of the night was well after the sun went down and while she was gone, he heard a knock on the door. He blinked rapidly when he saw his mother and father standing in the doorway. “Jason?”

“Hey,” he said tiredly and stood as they walked in. It felt weird to finally see a familiar face, and one that knew who he was. “She left for another test a little while ago.”

Within moments, they both engulfed him in a hug as his mom started to cry. He patted her back as he said, “She’ll be okay, Mom. She’s tough.”

His dad bit his lip as his eyes filled with tears. “Yeah, she is. I always call her our little truck driver.”

Jason smiled as he remembered how much Gram loved being called that. He swallowed down the pain and nodded. “She’ll be okay.”
